My recent trip to Malaysia
~ Reason: Sister's only daughter's wedding dinner
(Actually she's already registered & married in Singapore. This is jz the Chinese ceremony that the groom's parents want them to go through.)
~ Whom she's invited: My sis (her mother), Shirley (her mum's good friend), my mum (her grandmother), Princess (her cousin, my darling niece), King (cousin's buddy), Lance (her good friend), Teresa & family (her good friend + husband + daughter + son).
Sept 21:
We left Singapore via Grassland Coach (20-seater) at 9.45pm. OK for everyone except me. I hated the journey. The seat was extremely uncomfortable. The stupid TV was also so in-the-way. Would hardly stretch myself. I sat in such a position that I felt like I was "delivering a baby". SIGH!!!
Sept 22:
Arrived around 8am. Waited for Jasmine (niece) & Henry (her husband) to come pick us. Were brought to her in-laws' place as we can't check-in to hotel till 2pm. They brought us for "breakfast" around 10+, then went back to their home again :( We requested that they try to check us in earlier so we went to the hotel around 12+ where we managed to get our rooms. Travelling from their home to the hotel takes half an hr at least, depending on traffic conditions!
The weather in that town is very very hot & dry. Good thing it rained that morning but it's still very unbearable for us. They booked us in to Hotel Summit at Bt Mertajam. There's s shopping centre jz behind the hotel. Had quite a bad initial encounter with the hotel as we found hair on the tables, tissue shreds on the carpet, spoilt lamps in my room (share with mum), & sis's room's lock was spoilt! The swimming pool & coffee house was pathetic. Very deserted! Went to the shopping mall. Nothing to rave about. Like a smaller version of People's Park.
Princess arrived around noon with King on Penang Island airport but decided to not check-in as the travelling back & forth will be a sheer waste of time. They went to "explore" Geroge Town instead but she found it to be "really boring". They spent RM180 jz on taxi fares alone! I think it's daylight robbery lor! It took them another 45 mins to get to the hotel in the evening.
We had dinner at the in-laws' place again! Really exhausted by all the travelling.. even though we were chauffered in air-conditioned cars :( Sigh!! To top it all, we were told of the wedding day plans vaguely so none really know what to expect the next day!??
Sept 23:
The day. We were told to gather at the Bride's room at 10.30am. But Murphy's Law is always true so everything was a mess in the morning. Jasmine had to do her hair & make-up early morning & she was already very 紧张. But the car that was supposed to pick her after that was half an hr late! So the Groom got a big fat scolding from her early in the morning. Then her hotel room's lock was spoilt so instead of "marrying" from that room, she decide to "marry" from MY room. (sulk! - means I have to tidy up for them!!) At 9+, she "plonked" her 大衿姐&小舅子 in her cousin's room even though her cousin was still fast asleep! I simply do not understand how these people plan things.
The Groom & his entourage of "brothers" arrived at around 11.30am.. After all the hullabaloo & the tea ceremony, we left the hotel in 8 cars, then to the temple, then back to in-laws' place for another round of tea ceremony.
Since we had the afternoon free, we thought of visiting Penang Hill - which met with much "disapproval". They were afraid that we might not make it back on time for the wedding dinner. So we finally decide to jz go for a short makan session nearby. The taxi that came to pick us brought us to Taman Mutiara for some char kway teow & wanton noodles & then back to the hotel.. all in less than 2 hrs & we had to pay him RM50! If that's not daylight robbery, I don't know what is. Haiz.. Fares are so exhorbitant & you actually can't spot a taxi on the road at all. If you need one, you must call to book! Sheer frustration!
Well, at least the dinner compensated for all the inconvenience. It was a rather "refreshing" experience, a wonderful feast, except for the noise pollution. The stage that they've put up has the speakers blasting like nobody's business. Really deafening. I had to put ear plugs to soften the effects. But the food was GOOD.. really.. & different. At least I must say I did enjoy myself for that 2 hrs :) My sis had to flaunt her vocals by singing 2 songs on stage. Oh boy!! Can faint!
Sept 24:
Decide to shorten our stay so trying to get Henry to get tickets for us to GO HOME!! Unfortunately, couldn't get the budget airlines tix so had to settle for coach again :( Woe is me!! or rather woe is us..
Told Henry to let us keep one hotel room so that we can at least rest there in the afternoon but he claimed that they've already made plans for the day so told us to all check-up by noon! I made some calls from the hotel to Singapore & was told on the 1st day I arrived that the calls cost RM3 per minute. Imagine my utter shock when my phone bill came up to RM112!! Outrageous man! Pay lor.. What to do??!
Then "inefficient" Henry couldn't make proper plans for us so after sending off Princess & King, we were "stuck" at the in-laws' place the ENTIRE AFTERNOON, after lunch. Simply sickening lor.. Supposed to bring us shopping but again due to travelling time, they're afraid that there's "no time" again!! Sickening.. Sickening.. The heat at that place is really killing me! The house was like an oven so I was literally baked. Plus in my haste, I forgot to bring my BP pills so I've been out of medication for days - going to blow-up any time. Was so so angry - ended up crying.. Sigh! Hopeless me.. Soooo useless.. Must be stronger lah.. Aiyoyo.. Mum had to coop up at their place too.. with hot air & squat toilet. Poor old lady. I feel so sorry to put her through all these nonsense. ANGRY!
And can you imagine what they make us eat for dinner? Steamboat! Madness, right? In such hot weather. Xiao liao lor.. They told us that our coach leaves at 8pm but from 7.35pm the coach company had been calling them to rush us over! It took off the minute we boarded & rushed as if there's no tomorrow. It's true.. I'm simply beyond words liao.. Having "absorbed" all the heat in the afternoon, I was boiling mad.. So I said I need the coach's aircon to be cold so I can become an icicle - & my wish came true.. Good grief! The coach's aircon was so cold, I literally frozed. So now I'm all numb but still can feel the heat slowly emitting from within! Sigh to the nth degree!
Sept 25:
Reached Singapore around 5.30am, & home around 7am. Home Sweet Home.. But sis is confirmed ill! So is mum. Both coughing very bad. Sis even had fever & when I brought her to the doc later in the day, doc even thinks she's contracted lungs infection! So will have to go for x-ray the following day. Sigh! What a horrible trip it was. Hmmm.. Plus upon return, she heard that her son's also ill & even "coughed out blood" with no money to see doc. Tragic case! Like those 粤语残片!
Go Penang like never go at all. Never get to see Penang Bridge, Penang Hill, Penang Beaches, etc, etc, etc.. Jz heat, heat, & more heat! It's all Jasmine's & Henry's fault!
Thus endeth our uneventful & torturous trip to Malaysia :(
